A Tribute To
Michael Holmes

Michael Holmes

July 23, 1998 – April 20, 2021

Michael passed away at the young age of 22 from rare brain cancer called astrocytoma. The cancer was aggressive and Michael lost his life fiercely battling the diagnosis after only 30 days. He was a fighter – a frequently seen trait in Michael – no matter the outcome he gave everything his all. He may have lost his life to this incurable disease but his legacy will live on. He will forever be remembered as a standout colleague, successful entrepreneur, and an unforgettable friend. Our goal in sharing his story is to touch the hearts of young men and women so they use their time on this earth to live it extraordinarily – as Michael did.

In his early life, Michael always strived to succeed. In high school, he finished second in his class while participating in high school sports, working a part-time job, and starting his first business as an entrepreneur. His business idea won him and his team a $5,000 grant to launch their company.

Michael’s story continued into college. As a freshman at DePaul University located in Chicago, Michael became the youngest Treasurer of the Phi Kappa Psi – Illinois Zeta Fraternity’s 27 year history. Leveraging his leadership, passion, and self-taught financial knowledge, Michael brought the Fraternity out of its debt (which exceeded $25,000) and received high praise from the National Fraternity Headquarters. While working full-time to put himself through school, Michael made time to mentor younger finance students, hosted a podcast, and graduated Summa Cum Laude.

Amid the pandemic, while witnessing the emerging struggles amongst young professionals, Michael co-founded the podcast InTheir20s which provides insight from leading influencers recounting the steps they took in their 20s to achieve their current success. Over 40 interviews later, the podcast continues to amass a following and spread valuable advice to young professionals.

No one thinks about death. No one thinks about dying. Especially when you are in your 20’s. You are in the most exciting years of your young life, starting your career, celebrating your achievements, and enjoying the incredible exuberance of youth. Michael’s death was unexpected, it was tragic and sudden. But he would have been so proud knowing his story will go on to impact the lives of others. So let’s use his story, let’s remember him, let’s honor Michael, and spread awareness of life’s fragility.

The fundraiser we have planned is to help cover Michael’s memorial expenses. We hope to use the remaining funds to establish a legacy scholarship on his behalf that will support like-minded individuals who aim to realize their aspirations similar to the ones Michael had dedicated his life to achieve.

We celebrate the life of Michael Patrick Holmes.

With heartfelt appreciation,
